Description

Trazodone is a serotonin antagonist and reuptake inhibitor (SARI) used to treat major depressive disorder. It increases serotonin activity in the brain to help restore mood balance, reduce anxiety, and improve sleep quality. Many patients notice changes in appetite and energy levels as the medication takes effect.

Side effects and precautions: Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and blurred vision. More serious but rare effects include priapism (prolonged erection lasting over 4 hours)—if this occurs, stop immediately and seek emergency care. There’s an increased risk of suicidal thoughts, especially in people under 24 in the first few months of treatment; report any mood changes to your doctor right away. Do not combine with alcohol or MAO inhibitors. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this drug affects you. Tell your doctor about all other medications, especially serotonin-affecting drugs like SSRIs, as combining them can be dangerous.

Recommended dosage:
The usual initial dose is 150 mg daily in divided doses.

Dosage may be increased by 50 mg per day every 3 to 4 days based on your response and tolerance.

Take shortly after a meal or light snack.

Do not stop suddenly, or you may experience dizziness, vomiting, agitation, or electric shock feelings.
Take exactly as directed by your doctor or pharmacist, and allow up to two weeks to feel the full benefit.
